Photoinduced Absorption Spectroscopy of Photoelectrocatalytic Methylene Blue Oxidation on Titania and Hematite: The Thermodynamic and Kinetic Impacts on Reaction Pathways

Abstract: Photoelectrochemical oxidation of methylene blue is investigated, with particular focus on the difference in kinetics and thermodynamics of decoloration and mineralization employing photoinduced absorption spectroscopy. Hematite and titania photoanodes are used for the comparison of both reactions, which is determined to be associated with the depth of the valence band (3.2 vs 2.5 V for titania and hematite, respectively). Methylene blue is mineralized by the titania photoanode, however it is only oxidized to … Show more

“…BiVO 4 and TiO 2 photoanodes were fabricated using modified metal–organic deposition methods reported previously, yielding a thickness of 1 μm and 1.5 μm for BiVO 4 (ref. 10) and TiO 2 , 25 respectively. BiVO 4 and TiO 2 exhibit monoclinic-scheelite and anatase phases determined from X-ray diffraction characterizations (details of fabrication methods and structural characterizations are given in the ESI, Fig.…”

“…Methylene blue with an empirical formula of C16H18ClN3S was used as the model dye. It is a well-known and easily measurable dye, allowing for accurate monitoring of its degradation and oxidation processes [24,25]. The moderate molecular weight chitosan (C12H24N2O9) flakes were utilized as catalyst support for both photocatalysts.…”

“…This indicates that some MB molecules have not been immediately mineralized at the initial stage, and some of the intermediate organics still exist in the solution. This may be due to the fact that the active groups first destroy the chromophore and benzene ring-like structure to produce a series of intermediate organic compounds, 49 which are then further degraded to CO 2 and H 2 O instead of directly mineralizing the MB molecules to CO 2 and H 2 O.…”
