Photogrammetry Applied to Wind-Tunnel Testing

Abstract: In image-based measurements, quantitative image data must be mapped to threedimensional object space. Analytical photogrammetric methods, which may be used to accomplish this task, are discussed from the viewpoint of experimental fluid dynamicists. The Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) for camera calibration, used in pressure sensitive paint, is summarized. An optimization method for camera calibration is developed that can be used to determine the camera calibration parameters, including those describing len… Show more

“…In [8], three optical methods for measuring model deformation were compared by Burner A W and Fleming G A and characteristics of different methods were achieved. Liu T and Cattafesta investigated the application of photogrammetry in wind tunnel test [9]. In [10], a kind of optical measurement device based on three line array CCDs-Optotrak system and the measurement technology by the system were investigated by SONG Jin for low speed wind tunnel.…”

“…On the other hand, planes have the benefit of a constant surface normal orientation across the artifact, and are easier to manufacture and validate to subwavelength accuracy using interferometric techniques. Planes have been used to calibrate optical SMSs, [3][4][5] and the control points used by the bundle adjustment software typically consist of intersecting points in a checkerboard pattern, 0091-3286/2011/$25.00 C 2011 SPIE circle centers in an array of circles, or some other ordered set of points.…”

“…Photogrammetry, first developed to examine topography 23 , is commonly used in architecture, archaeology, engineering and accident reconstruction. Some of the common uses in aerospace engineering include model and equipment positioning, parachute canopy measurements 25 , model deformation and rotor blade deformation and position measurements 26,27 .…”

“…Photogrammetry is a measurement technique that uses photography in determining the two-dimensional or threedimensional coordinates of an object of interest 23 . For the three-dimensional coordinates of an object to be obtained, multiple photographs of an object are taken from different perspectives.…”
