Photoelectrochemical Effects of Guanidinium Thiocyanate on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Performance and Stability

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the photoelectrochemical effect of guanidinium thiocyanate (GuSCN) in the base electrolyte composed of 1-methylbenzimidazole (0.45 M) and 3-methoxypropionitrile on the efficiency of electron injection (Φinj), interfacial recombination kinetics, and photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). A significant increase in the photocurrent for DSCs with GuSCN was observed, which was higher than that for DSCs with the base electrolyte. The dependence of the short-circ… Show more

“…[36] On the other hand, this shift can contribute to the larger photocurrents measured for the "PA side cells". [37] Finally, the experimental curves were fitted with an EC [19] to calculate the counter electrode charge transfer time t CE and electron lifetime t n values for the two cells (the fitted curves were also reported in Figure 7). The obtained lifetime values were 0.28 and 0.25 s for the "PA side" and "CE side" DSSCs, respectively, while the corresponding t CE were 14 and 40 ms, in agreement with the discussion reported above.…”

“…The weight of the iodine was maintained at one tenth of the total mole amount of thetetrapropyl ammonium iodide. Guanidinium thiocyanate was added as an additive to the electrolyte which is widely used to increase the open circuit voltage (V oc ) of the solar cells and the stability of the electrolyte during the I-V measurements (Yu et al 2010;Zhang et al 2009). …”

“…[ 8,9 ] These additives adsorb on the TiO 2 and decrease the BeT. [ 10 ] Modifi cation of TiO 2 by alkyl silane is another approach to suppress the BeT. [11][12][13] Although these approaches increased the effi ciency of DSSC, the improvement is not very high because the layer thickness is not high.…”
