Photoelectrocatalytic water treatment systems: degradation, kinetics and intermediate products studies of sulfamethoxazole on a TiO2–exfoliated graphite electrode

Abstract: EG–TiO2 photoanode was applied for the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole. Significant COD abatement was obtained and degradation route was proposed.

“…The photoelectrocatalysis k 1 was over seven orders of magnitude greater than for electrocatalytic treatment alone. Applying a bias potential enhances the charge carrier separation and diminishes the extent of recombination (Equation (3)) [2,43], which increases the half-life of the oxidants photogenerated on the photoanode surface [13,44]. Moreover, the evolution of O 2 on the anode surface may contribute to selective scavenging e cb − through Equation 6, which yields superoxide radical (O 2 •− ) [16,45].…”

“…A similar characterisation methods has been previously reported 13 . electrochemical and photoelectrochemical experiments. The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical experimental protocols are similar to that described in our previous reports 8,43 . Photocurrent measurements, linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed on an Autolab PGSTAT204 (Netherlands) potentiostat/galvanostat.…”

“…When this technique is used to treat water contaminated with recalcitrant organic molecules such as pharmaceuticals, total mineralization to water and carbon dioxide can be achieve over a period of time or the molecules can be broken down to non-toxic organic molecules within a short period of time 7 . Another interesting advantage of this approach is that the use of bias potential results in significant reduction in the challenge of rapid and spontaneous recombination of charge carriers that is peculiar to photocatalysis 8 . Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) remained the most applied semiconducting photocatalyst as anodic material for photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organics [9][10][11] .…”

“…The outstanding electron mobility of EG is essential in channelling photogenerated charge carriers and thereby preventing recombination. 35 In this study, a thermal treatment technique was used to fabricate BiVO 4 /ZnO heterostructured composite and the composite was combined with exfoliated graphite to form EG-BiVO 4 /ZnO electrode. More importantly, we investigate the solar photoelectrocatalytic behaviours of EG-BiVO 4 /ZnO photoanode using the degradation of rhodamine B dye as a case study.…”
