Acupuncture is the practice of applying needles to target specific pressures points in the body. Since originating in China, acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years to treat numerous conditions including chronic pain and mood disorders. Alopecia is a common dermatologic condition associated with psychological distress and decreased quality of life. Although it remains underexplored in western medicine, recent evidence suggests that acupuncture may be efficacious in the treatment of alopecia. In this review, we discuss the available evidence describing the efficacy of acupuncture or moxibustion alone (ACU) and in combination with other traditional and alternative interventions (ACU + TRAD) for hair loss. Additionally, the proposed physiologic mechanisms, targeted acupuncture points, and the benefits and barriers to treatment will be further described. An exploratory search using PubMed, EMBASE and Scopus databases was performed for studies that evaluated the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on alopecia. In these studies, both ACU and ACU + TRAD were efficacious for numerous etiologies of hair loss including alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, and seborrheic alopecia. Given their ability to modulate the immune system, as well as neuronal networks associated with emotional cognition, the most frequently targeted acupoints were ST 36, GV 20, and LR 3. The proposed mechanistic effect is dependent upon disease etiology and is theorized to be twofold: reduction of inflammation and decrease in testosterone levels. The limited side effect profile of acupuncture makes it an advantageous treatment option, however, factors including cost, time, limited access, and aversion to needles may serve as barriers to treatment.

Background: Skin abscesses are a common skin condition usually caused by bacterial infections and their incidence is increasing in children. Its current management strategy is still mainly incision and drainage, sometimes with antibiotics. In pediatric patients, surgical incision and drainage of skin abscesses is challenging compared to in adults because of their specific age and psychological characteristics and high aesthetic requirements. Therefore, it is important to seek better treatment options. Patients and methods: We reported 17 cases of skin abscesses in pediatric patients aged 1 to 9 years. Ten cases had lesions on the face and neck and 7 cases on the trunk and limbs. They all received treatment based on fire needle combined with topical mupirocin. Results:The lesions of all 17 pediatric patients healed within 4 to 14 days, with a median time of 6 days, and all achieved satisfactory results with no scarring left behind. No adverse events were observed in all patients, and no recurrence occurred within 4 weeks. Conclusion: For skin abscesses in pediatric patients, early application of a combination therapy based on fire needle is convenient, aesthetic, economical, safe and clinically important as an alternative to incision and drainage, and deserves further clinical promotion.

The article presents a clinical case of the abscessing perifolliculitis of the head. Nowadays due to socio-economic circumstances, there is an increase in the number of patients with abscessing perifolliculitis of the head. Among the triggering factors are emergency conditions associated with chronic stress, poor hygiene, and the need to use special clothing and head protection in military personnel, which cause initial occlusion in the scalp area. Treatment is usually difficult and often unsuccessful, with regular relapses after treatment is stopped. However, the issues of diagnosing abscessing perifolliculitis of the head remain relevant and extremely difficult in the clinical practice of dermatologists and related specialists, and a single treatment protocol with clear recommendations has not yet been developed. All of the above determines the need to study the specifics of clinical and morphological manifestations in patients suffering from abscessing perifolliculitis of the head with the further aim of pathogenetic substantiation and development of complex therapy. The article aimed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of the abscessing perifolliculitis of the head by studying the clinical and anamnestic features and the course of the disease on the example of a clinical case with further implementation of recommendations in clinical practice.
