Photodegradation of ceftriaxone in aqueous solution by using UVC and UVC/H2O2 oxidation processes

Abstract: This study investigated the performance of UVC/H 2 O 2 and UVC processes for the degradation and mineralization of ceftriaxone as an antibiotic. The highest ceftriaxone degradation was obtained at a solution pH of 5 and H 2 O 2 concentration of 10 mg/L. The apparent rate constant of ceftriaxone degradation was found to be 0.0302, 0.0165, and 0.0065 min −1 in the UVC/H 2 O 2 process for the initial ceftriaxone concentrations of 5, 10, and 20 mg/L, respectively. Degradation and mineralization efficiencies of cef… Show more

“…Bacterial contaminations as a serious worldwide threat endanger the health of millions of people and cause problems in several industries ranging from water treatment to food processing annually. , On the other hand, a rapid and continuous increase in the drug resistance of bacterial strains (due to the widespread abuse of antibiotics in livestock and the human health) along with the healthcare costs has drawn much global concerns to this challenge as the recent WHO report has warned . For instance, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as a prevalent antibiotic-resistant bacterium, quickly spreads in public spaces such as hospital beds and induces a serious skin infection and a great risk to the public, especially those with open wounds.…”

“…78 The H 2 O 2 concentration was analyzed using a UV-vis spectrophotometer (HACH DR5000) at 410 nm wavelength, with titanium(IV) oxysulfate as a coloured indicator (DIN 38402H15 method). 79 The concentrations of residual total ion species of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ were achieved using the 1,10-phenanthroline method at the end of operation time. 57 The TC concentration was monitored by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (Agilent 1260 Innity HPLC) equipped with a UV-VIS detector and C18 chromatographic column (4.6 mm  100 mm, 3.5 mm) at a detected wavelength of 359 nm.…”

“…Many methods are used for the removal of pharmaceutics from aquatic environments, such as anaerobic digestion [17], phytoremediation [18], biodegradation by pure cultures [19], moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) [20], and adsorption [21,22]. Also, advanced oxidation methods [23] are used, such as electro Fenton [24] and photodegradation [25]. Physicochemical methods have disadvantages such as high operating costs and the formation of secondary pollutants [26].…”
