Abstract:Molecular mechanisms based on photo-physical processes involving dietary carotenoids, their radicals, and the role of oxygen are discussed and used to suggest explanations of the poorly understood and often contradictory results related to mainly skin and vision. Differing and conflicting efficiencies of singlet oxygen reactions with carotenoids of biological importance are discussed in environments from ‘simple’ organic solvents to single He La cells. A range of free radical reactions with carotenoids, and th… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
