Photochemical and photophysical properties of tetranuclear and hexanuclear clusters of metals with d10 and s2 electronic configurations

Abstract: Professor Borden, we wrongly attributed to him the ab initio HFJ3-21G calculations of secondary deuterium kinetic isotope effects in the first two complete paragraphs on page 542. As the senior author, M.J.S.D. accepts full responsibility for this error and apologizes unreservedly.

“…The luminescence properties of inorganic tetra-and hexanuclear Cu(I) clusters and similar clusters in Cu(I)-MTs have been reported (26,43,44,46). Although the Cu(I) 6 clusters exhibit only a single low energy band at ϳ700 nm, high and low energy bands at ϳ430 and 620 nm are observed in the luminescence spectra of Cu(I) 4 clusters.…”

“…However in polynuclear Cu(I) complexes, including the Cu(I) 8 MT-1 complex, which exhibit relatively short Cu...Cu distances (Ͻ2.8 Å) an intramolecular d 10 -d 10 interaction of adjacent Cu(I) ions leads to a number of excited states with a largely metal character. These weak low energy bands have been assigned to formally spin forbidden 3d 3 4s metal cluster-centered (CC) transitions (42)(43)(44)(45). Thus, the occurrence of similar transitions in Cu(I) 4 Zn 4 MT-3 suggest the presence of a Cu(I) 4 -thiolate cluster.…”

“…10 When reduced to copper(I) state they can additionally provide long-lived electronically excited states, and exhibit intense luminescence. [11][12][13] The redox potential of acyclic and macrocyclic Schiff base complexes has deserved a strong interest since it seems to be directly related to some of the biologically important properties of this type of compounds. Mostly, Schiff-base copper complexes have been intensively investigated as enzyme mimics by their dioxygen binding ability, and catalytic activity in oxidative processes.…”

“…In the emitting excited state the electronic structure should be similar to that of the ground-state trimers M, (M= alkali, Cu, Ag, and Au) which were the subject of numerous studies [ 3-51. Moreover, the electron configuration of mercury in the Hg$+ cation is formally intermediate between thatofHg(0) (dios2) andHg(II) (d"s'). The emission behavior of d'Os* and dl" cluster complexes [ 6,7] including those of Hg(II) [8] has been studied in some detail quite recently. Finally, the nature of electronically excited Hg!+ is also of interest with regard to the photochemical activity of mercury cluster compounds.…”
