Photocatalytic Treatment of Stained Wastewater Coming from Handicraft Factories. A Case Study at the Pilot Plant Level

Abstract: UV/H2O2 process and TiO2-based photocatalysis were studied in the present work. The effectiveness of these methods was tested in the treatment of effluents taken from handicraft factories. Microorganisms, dyes, and different organic pollutants were detected in the industrial effluents. The experimental procedure for the wastewater treatment was carried out in a patented sunlight reactor on a pilot plant scale. From this study, UV/H2O2 was found to be the best treatment for dye elimination. The optimal peroxide… Show more

“…Importantly, our works are results of innovative research and we are the pioneer in this field in Thailand. Benefits of this research are to solve the problems, such as use of synthetic or chemical colour in handicrafts industry that is toxic to living organisms and caused of environmental pollution (Yadav et al, 2022;Murcia Mesa et al, 2021;Ajò et al, 2019;Konstadakopulos, 2008). Synthetic colours, including acrylic colours, are imported from European and other countries, leading our country to spend a lot of money on these colours contributing to a trade deficit (Hagan & Poulin, 2021;Ferreira et al, 2004;Gilbert & Cooke, 2001).…”

“…The handicrafts industry commonly uses the synthetic or chemical colours that are toxic to living organisms and cause environmental pollution (Yadav, Tripathi & Tripathi, 2022;Murcia Mesa et al, 2021;Ajò et al, 2019;Konstadakopulos, 2008). Additionally, synthetic colours are imported from Europian and other countries, leading our country to spent a lot of money on these imports, resulting in trade deficit (Hagan & Poulin, 2021;Ferreira et al, 2004;Gilbert & Cooke, 2001).…”

“…The best diastereomeric excess for R-(+)-limonene and S-(−)-limonene were 36% and 34% respectively, both of them using the catalyst with the ligand Bipyridine. Usually, sunlight and this type of catalysts are employed to treat polluted water [64,65] or involved in green oxidation for organic synthesis [66,67]. This type of works evidences a new way to tackle the generation of these high added value compounds as the limonene epoxides are.…”

“…Photocatalytic oxidation has come to the fore as an alternative and environmentally friendly method for inactivation of hazardous substances and microorganisms in aqueous solutions, with extensions to the treatment of drinking water [ 1 , 2 ], urban and industrial wastewater [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ] and more recently to biomedical liquid waste [ 10 , 11 ].…”
