Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B dye by cotton textile coated with SiO2-TiO2 and SiO2-TiO2-HY composites

Abstract: This work is devoted to study the photocatalytic ability of cotton textiles functionalized with SiO 2-TiO 2 and SiO 2-TiO 2-HY composites to degrade a dye molecule. Coatings were prepared by sol-gel method and calcined at different temperatures in a range of 400-750 C. FTIR confirmed the existence of SiÀ ÀOÀ ÀTi bounds and the band located in the region between 570 and 600 cm À1 was used to calculate the framework Si/Al ratio of HY in the SiO 2-TiO 2-HY composites. XRD confirmed the presence of nanosized TiO 2… Show more

“…Landi et al studied the photocatalytic ability of SiO 2 -TiO 2 and SiO 2 -TiO 2 -HY (zeolite) coated textile substrates. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated by monitoring, over time, the degradation of Rhodamine B dye (RhB), a typical textile industry pollutant [109].…”

“…However, in the current stage of the society, the use of treatment methods that enable the reduction of pollution is also extremely appropriate. In this sense, the advanced oxidation process based on the use of semiconductor materials has demonstrated high efficiency in air purification [2][3][4] or liquid effluents [5,6].…”

“…When the samples are immersed in the aqueous dye solution, still without UV light irradiation, a first phenomenon occurs, which is the adsorption of the dye onto the sample's surface. Therefore, it is recommended that samples should be kept in the dark until the adsorption-desorption equilibrium is reached [87]. Additionally, due to the granitic nature of the aggregates, some photocatalytic efficiency also occurs for blank samples, that is, those that have not been modified by the addition of semiconductor material.…”
