Nanoparticles (NPs) of noble metals such as silver (Ag NPs) or gold (Au NPs) draw the attention of scientists looking for new compounds to use in medical applications. Scientists have used metal NPs because of their easy preparation, biocompatibility, ability to influence the shape and size or modification, and surface functionalization. However, to fully use their capabilities, both the benefits and their potential threats should be considered. One possibility to reduce the potential threat and thus prevent the extinction of their properties resulting from the agglomeration, they are covered with a neutral material, thus obtaining core‐shell nanostructures that can be further modified and functionalized depending on the subsequent application. In this review, we focus on discussing the properties and applications of Ag NPs and Au NPs in the medical field such as the treatment of various diseases, drug carriers, diagnostics, and many others. In addition, the following review also discusses the use and potential applications of Ag@SiO2 and Au@SiO2 core‐shell nanostructures, which can be used in cancer therapy and diagnosis, treatment of infections, or tissue engineering.

Cancer is a collection of illnesses characterized by aberrant cellular proliferation that can infiltrate or metastasize to distant anatomical sites, posing a notable threat to human well‐being due to its substantial morbidity and death rates worldwide. The potential of plant‐derived natural compounds as anticancer medicines has been assessed owing to their favorable attributes of few side effects and significant antitumor activity. Mangrove plants and their derived compounds have been scientifically shown to exhibit many significant beneficial biological activities, such as anti‐inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and hepatoprotective properties. This study summarized mangrove plants and their derived compounds as potential anticancer agents, with an emphasis on the underlying molecular mechanisms. To explore this, we gathered data on the preclinical (in vivo and in vitro) anticancer effects of mangrove plants and their derived compounds from reputable literature spanning 2000 to 2023. We conducted thorough searches in various academic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online, SpringerLink, Google Scholar, Scopus, and the Web of Science. The results demonstrated that mangrove plants and their derived compounds have promising anticancer properties in preclinical pharmacological test systems through various molecular mechanisms, including induction of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, autophagy, antiproliferative, antimetastatic, and other miscellaneous actions. Upon thorough observation of the pertinent information, it is suggested that mangrove plants and their derived chemicals may serve as a potential lead in the development of novel drugs for cancer therapy.

Application of thiourea polyurethane foam/zinc oxide nanocomposite for anticancer effects and antimicrobial potential

There is a continuous need to fabricate new antimicrobial agents due to the continuous development of microbial drug resistance. Recently, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) have emerged as a promising choice for developing new drugs owing to their exceptional broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anticancer action. In the current work, thiourea polyurethane foam/zinc oxide nanocomposite was synthesized by coupling ZnONPs and thiourea polyurethane foam (TPUF) to test its antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Ultraviolet–visible spectra, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction (XRD), zeta potential and dynamic light scattering analyses were investigated to study the characterization of thiourea polyurethane foam/zinc oxide nanocomposite (TPUF/ZnO). The synthesized TPUF/ZnO was examined as an antimicrobial agent against gram-positive bacterium (Bacillus cereus), gram-negative bacterium (Escherichia coli), and fungus (Aspergillus niger). The results of the agar well-diffusion test showed good inhibition zones against E. coli (16 mm), B. cereus (13 mm), and A. niger (26 mm). The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) values of TPUF/ZnO against B. cereus and E. coli were 350 μg/mL and 400 μg/mL. TEM of TPUF/ZnO-treated B. cereus and E. coli bacteria displayed different ultrastructural modifications such as separation of the plasma membrane from the cell wall and vacuole formation that led to a complete lysis and bacterial death. The anticancer activity of TPUF/ZnO was also evaluated against liver and breast cancer cell lines (HepG-2 and MCF-7). TPUF/ZnO showed good cytotoxicity activities against HepG-2, and MCF-7, with IC50 values of 77.08 ± 1.36 and 109.01 ± 3.98 µg/ml, respectively. Thus, TPUF/ZnO could be a promising raw material in the field of food packaging and provide a possible anticancer compound for hepatocellular carcinoma and breast carcinoma. Graphic abstract
