Photocatalytic decomposition of Trypan Blue over nanocomposite thin films

Abstract: The photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and gold (Au) modified TiO 2 (Au/TiO 2 ), supported in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) thin film, was evaluated in the photodegradation of Trypan Blue (TB) under sunlight irradiation. The effect of parameters such as the photocatalyst amount and pH on TiO 2 photocatalytic activity is investigated. Oxygen flow stream was applied to enhance the decomposition process of TB. The maximum photoactivity was attained using Au/TiO 2 -PMMA thin film at pH=2.

“…Although there are fewer reports on the inclusion of photocatalysts for environmental remediation through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), researchers have been long studying the inclusion of photocatalyst for membrane performance and properties enhancement and some conclusions can be adapted for the photocatalytic property. Among them, the photocatalyst mass was the most studied variable.…”

“…TiO 2 is used in solar photocatalysis because it generates the reactive hydroxyl radical OH • on its surface [16,17]. TiO 2 has been used for photocatalytic disinfection in water treatment [18][19][20][21] and has also proved effective against organic contaminants [22][23][24]. In recent years, there has been interest in using compound parabolic concentrators (CPC) with TiO 2 because of its efficiency of collection of both diffuse and direct sunlight [25], and solar photocatalytic disinfection by the CPC method has been reported to achieve inactivation of bacteria [26][27][28].…”

“…Due to the outstanding of several advantages of polymer substrates, such as, flexibility in nature, mechanical and chemical stabilities, high durability, low cost and availability [29]; hence, it has been used as a support for TiO 2 photocatalyst. Recently, various types of polymeric materials used as the polymer-supported TiO 2 have shown promising performance for the photocatalysis, for example, polyaniline (PANI) [18], polyethylene terephthalate (PET) [9], silicone [28], polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) [7] and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) [14]. Though, the methods or techniques to prepare the polymer-supported TiO 2 photocatalyst, such as, sol-gel and spin coating [16], dip and spin coating [3,4,36] and plasma layer deposition [17], are practically difficult and still have some disadvantages.…”
