TiO 2 supported on SiO 2 surface is effective on the recovery of photocatalyst, morphological control, and coating on the substrate. Furthermore, it shows much higher photocatalytic activity than pure TiO 2 . The silica support is quite influential on the surface properties of TiO 2 supported on SiO 2 . The enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 -SiO 2 could be explained by the effects of surface area, adsorption, band-gap energy and local structure. However, it is difficult to say which one is the most important factor responsible for the photocatalytic property of TiO 2 -SiO 2 . For example, the reduction of particle size could effect on both of the surface area and band-gap energy. And, Ti-O-Si bonds could modify the band-gap energy and local structure. Therefore, the photocatalytic properties of TiO 2 -SiO 2 should be expressed by sum of many factors such as surface area, adsorption, band-gap energy and local structure.

Photocatalytic process has been applied to the treatment of air pollutants. It is necessary to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 and design of photocatalytic system, for the practical application. The practical aspects for the application of TiO 2 were discussed. Various species, such as transition metal ion, noble metal, metal oxide, and anion, could modify the surface of TiO 2 and improve the photocatalytic activity. Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system was very effective for the enhancement of photoactivity by applying a high voltage onto TiO 2 surface. It showed better photocatalytic activity for decomposition of various air pollutants and bacteria than TiO 2 photocatalysts. To apply the photocatalysts in a real environment, the stable immobilization of the catalyst on various substrates, such as steal plate, membrane, glass fiber, and so on, was very important. Based on these modified and/or immobilized TiO 2 , photocatalysis has been widely used in aircleaning systems.

The Au/MnO x /TiO 2 catalyst was used for the photocatalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide. The catalytic activity of Au/MnO x /TiO 2 with low concentration of manganese (3-7 mol%) was much higher than that of Au/TiO 2 . The surface of Au/MnO x /TiO 2 was characterized by XPS and Raman spectroscopy. While the main state of manganese in 13.8 mol% MnO x /TiO 2 was Mn 4+ species, Mn 3+ was the dominant species in the samples with below 6.5 mol% manganese. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the interaction between the MnO x and TiO 2 form Mn-O-Ti species in which the state of manganese was Mn 3+ . The Au particles also interacted with both MnO x and TiO 2 to modify the surface of them. In the case of the Au species, low loading of manganese produced the metallic Au 0 and perimeter interfacial Au d+ , whereas high loading showed the coexistence of three components which were metallic Au 0 , perimeter interfacial Au d+ , and oxidic Au 3+ . The catalytic active component was the metallic Au 0 and perimeter interfacial Au d+ species, which were dispersed on TiO 2 and Mn 3+ /TiO 2 .
