Carboxyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(P[POSS‐MAA]) modified layered double hydroxides (LDHs) (P[POSS‐MAA]‐LDHs) was prepared by exfoliating and recombination method, which used P(POSS‐MAA) and LDHs attracted each other through electrostatic force and hydrogen bond. The structure and morphology of P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs were characterized by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope, which showed that LDHs was exfoliated and P(POSS‐MAA) was on the surface of LDHs. Then it was introduced into the modified zanthoxylum bungeanum seed oil(MZBMSO) to obtain MZBMSO/P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs and applied it in leather fatliquoring process. The effect of the introduction of P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs on the flame retardancy, thermal stability, thermal insulation and smoke suppression of leather was investigated. Compared to the MZBMSO treated leather, the after flame time of MZBMSO/P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs treated leather decreased from 84 s to 32 s, and the limiting oxygen index increased from 23.1% to 27.5%, which exhibited improvement on flame retardancy of the leather. The temperature at 50% mass loss of MZBMSO/P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs treated leather increased from 375.1 to 408.3°C, which showed improvement on thermal stability of the leather. And the leather treated by MZBMSO/P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs had reduction of the total heat release and the total smoke production around 26.8% and 65.7%, respectively, which showed that MZBMSO/P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs treated leather had heat insulation and smoke suppression. Flame retardant mechanism of MZBMSO/(P(POSS‐MAA)‐LDHs) treated leather involved a combination of the gaseous phase and condensed phase flame retardancy. This work provided a new material for the flame retardant field and expanded the application range of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS).

The use of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as catalysts has gained widespread attention in various reactions due to their high activity and selectivity under mild reaction conditions. However, one major challenge in utilizing these catalysts is their tendency to aggregate, leading to catalyst deactivation and hindering their amplification and industrial application. To overcome this issue, herein, we used a method by coating the surface of Au NPs with a thin layer of SiO2, which resulted in the formation of a superior catalyst denoted as Au@SiO2/ZA. Characterization studies revealed that the SiO2 layer is coated on the surface of Au NPs and effectively prevents the aggregation and growth of the gold particles during the reaction process, which makes the catalyst display excellent stability in furfural (FF) oxidative esterification to methyl furoate (MF). Moreover, the stabilization strategy is not limited to SiO2 alone. It can also be extended to other oxides such as ZrO2, CeO2, and TiO2. We believe this work will provide a good reference for the design and development of an efficient and stable gold catalyst for the oxidative esterification reaction.

Bone implantation surgery is often accompanied by bacterial infection, resulting in infectious bone non‐union, pathological fracture and other serious consequences, which will aggravate the pain of patients. A non‐antibiotic coating consisting of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and levulinic acid (LA) with different concentrations was prepared by the authors on the zinc–aluminium alloy (ZA6‐1) using a wet chemistry treatment for orthopaedic application. The influence of SDS/LA concentrations on the surface morphology, composition and performance of the developed coating was investigated. The results showed that as‐prepared coating on a zinc alloy surface could improve the substrate's corrosion resistance and increase the degradation rate from 0.82 to 19.70 μm/year upon raising the SDS/LA concentration. Furthermore, higher hydrophilicity (<14°), better cell proliferation (>100%) and morphology, as well as good cell adhesion and differentiation (ALP >95% for 7 days) were observed on coated zinc alloys. The increased SDS/LA concentration slightly weakens the biocompatibility and enhances the antibacterial performance of coated zinc alloys due to the synergistic effect of SDS/LA. Overall, the coating comprising 6 wt.% SDS and 9 wt.% LA showed excellent antibacterial action with a high level of biocompatibility, confirming its potential application for orthopaedic implants.
