Photocatalytic asphalt mixtures: semiconductors’ impact in skid resistance and texture

Abstract: Photocatalytic asphalt mixtures have the capability of mitigating air quality problems and degrade oils/greases by using semiconductors. The techniques to do so can change their functional characteristics. This study aimed to analyse the functionalization effect on the essential surface characteristics, such as macrotexture, skid resistance, and microtexture. AC 14 and AC 6 mixtures were functionalised with nano-TiO 2 and micro-ZnO by spraying and bulk incorporation. Mean Profile Depth, British Pendulum and mi… Show more

“…By keeping a vertical distance of 25 cm between the top surface of the samples and the light source, the specimens were irradiated by light power density The spraying coating technique was used as the functionalization method of the samples. The coating was applied by spraying a TiO 2 aqueous suspension onto the specimens' surfaces based on our previous work carried out over asphalt mixtures developed by [8,40,41]. This method of functionalizing material surfaces consists of spraying the TiO 2 aqueous suspension onto the specimens' surfaces using an atmospheric air compressor (Figure 2b).…”

“…The functionalization techniques by spraying coating using aqueous solution and volume incorporation led to a difference in friction between −7% and 3%. The microtexture amplitude parameters were not affected by any functionalization technique except the skewness of AC 14 with 6% TiO 2 by volume incorporation [89].…”

“…Functionalization techniques with a sprayed aqueous solution containing nano-TiO 2 and/or micro-ZnO and nano-TiO 2 by volume incorporation led to a change in the SR between − 7% and 3 %. All functionalization techniques did not influence the microtexture amplitude parameters, except for the skewness of AC 14, incorporating 6 % TiO 2 by volume [45].…”
