Photocatalytic Activity and Filtration Performance of Hybrid TiO2-Cellulose Acetate Nanofibers for Air Filter Applications

Abstract: A facile method to prepare hybrid cellulose acetate nanofibers containing TiO2 (TiO2-CA nanofibers) by emulsion electrospinning technique was developed for the denitrification and filtration of particulate matters (PMs). This work found that hybrid TiO2-CA nanofibers mainly contain the anatase form of TiO2, contributing to the photodecomposition of NO gas under UV irradiation. The TiO2-CA nanofibers also showed an excellent filtration efficiency of 99.5% for PM0.5 and a photocatalytic efficiency of 78.6% for N… Show more

“…Among the results, the higher TOC removal recorded for GCC 2 when compared with other composites, Degussa P25, and pure Cu 2 O materials. Totally, 62% of removal is attained at 160 min and 55% of removal is reached at 220 min for selected organic dyes, which further proves the degradation efficiency for GCC 2 [ 44 , 45 , 46 ].…”

“…Recent works have focused on the ES of polymers and cellulose blends for the development of filter materials, reporting promising performances for face mask/ respirators [ 158 , 211 , 212 ]. Additionally, the cellulose acetate (CA) has shown to be an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based non-biodegradable polymers for the fabrication of electrospun nanofiber filters [ 159 , 181 , 213 ]. “…CA was selected because it is an abundant and biodegradable organic compound, frequently used for applications as filters, artificial skin and protective clothing. 41,42 The biodegradability of CA is an advantage compared to the typically employed synthetic polymers, as it means CA does not produce microplastic, both while in use and when it is disposed. 43 The electrospun fibres were doped by using air spraying or electrospraying to include, mix and combine the additives in different configurations.…”
