Photoaging in Asians

Abstract: The aging process of the skin can be divided into intrinsic and photoaging. Clinically, naturally aged skin is smooth, pale and finely wrinkled. In contrast, photoaged skin is coarsely wrinkled and associated with dyspigmentation and telangiectasia. Although the population of Asia is more than half the population of the Earth, no well-designed study has been undertaken to investigate the characteristics of cutaneous photodamage in Asian skin. As Asian skin is more pigmented, the acute and chronic cutaneous res… Show more

“…It is believed that solar radiation is an important pathogenic factor underlying the development of senile lentigo. Seborrheic keratosis (SK) is also a common problem in Asians, which is observed in 80% to 100% of population aged over 50 years 2. Among Chinese, most SKs are brown to dark brown.…”

“…The two most common methods utilised for face wrinkle measurement involve the use of skin casts or skin replicas [1,[8][9][10] or the use of images [1,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Biopsies [11,18,19], direct 3D invivo measurements [20] and elasticity measurements using a cutometer [8,10,21] have also been employed and a few studies utilised depth, number or length measurements for wrinkle quantification [12,14,19,22].…”

Three-dimensional measurements taken from the skin replicas rely on visual assessment by researchers to categorise the wrinkles [1,9].…”

“…Photoaging among Asians differ from their Caucasian counterparts in that dyspigmentation occurs to a greater extent than rhytid formation [1]. Common cosmetic concerns among individuals from the Far East include melasma, flat/small seborrheic keratoses, lentigines, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and ABNOM (or Hori's macules) among others.…”
