Photoactive Fe3O4@Fe2O3 Synthesized from Industrial Iron Oxide Dust for Fenton-Free Degradation of Multiple Organic Dyes

Abstract: Herein, we described a cost-effective, viable methodology for using an iron-based industrial waste material known as iron oxide dust (IOD), also known as Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) for the synthesis of their chemically reduced magnetic version named r-IOD (Fe 3 O 4 @α-Fe 2 O 3 ). r-IOD showed its visible-light-promoted photoresponsive behavior for the photodegradation of higher concentration (∼1000 mg L −1 ) of five different model dyes (methyl orange (MO), metanil yellow (MY), Congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB),… Show more

“…Previously r-IOD was used for the photocatalytic degradation of multiple dyes . However, when the r-IOD was synthesized using a larger amount of NaBH 4 , BET analysis showed a significant improvement in the surface area of r-IOD compared to that of IOD and the XRD analysis showed the presence of three different active phases of Fe(0), Fe 2 O 3 , and Fe 3 O 4 in r-IOD.…”

“…■ RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Synthesis of r-IOD. The r-IOD was synthesized by the previously reported method 38 with slight modification. IOD was reduced by the chemical reduction method at room temperature to get its chemically reduced version r-IOD.…”

“…To explore the photodegradation efficiency of Ag 3 PO 4 –MFP in real wastewater samples, we spiked BPA in various wastewater effluents collected from different industries. Subsequently, we investigated the photodegradation of the spiked samples , using absorption spectroscopy. The bar plot of the % removal of BPA in Figure a shows that BPA is degraded with significant efficiency (>70%) even from spiked wastewater samples, indicating the potential of Ag 3 PO 4 –MFP as a photocatalyst (here CS = control spiked real wastewater sample and SS= spiked real wastewater sample with catalyst).…”
