Photoacoustic Imaging and Sensing: A New Way to See the Eye

Abstract: Purpose: Photoacoustics (optoacoustics) is a hybrid technology utilizing light excitation of acoustic responses in targets of interest. It has found numerous applications in biomedicine, including eye research, because of its ability to report both morphological and functional data about the interrogated tissue. This presentation will give an overview of current applications. Methods: Wavelength-dependent absorption of light in a tissue chromophore causes local heating, leading to a thermoelastic expansion-con… Show more

“…The paucity of reliable and non-invasive biomarkers may delay progress in the risk assessment and development of optimal countermeasures. Technological advances and capacity building for biomarkers are needed: The development of a small non-contact IOP measurement device, 3D-ultrasonography 42 enhanced by hybrid techniques such as multispectral photoacoustic tomography 43 , and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging of the eye 44 for structural and functional imaging during spaceflight would be very helpful.…”

“…IR780 mediates mitochondrial-targeted SDT and can perform visual and accurate treatment under photoacoustic imaging (PAI) guidance. PAI is a new noninvasive and non-ionizing biomedical imaging method developed in recent years, which can monitor the treatment process in real time and visualize tumor treatment (Steinberg et al, 2019 ; Glickman, 2021 ). RSL-3 as a ‘One-Stone-Three-Birds’ agent for cooperatively enhanced SDT against breast cancer.…”
