In this report, we have developed a new bioinspired medical adhesive capable of providing a leak‐proof barrier for application to intestinal anastomoses. The newly synthesized adhesive is a terpolymer possessing three different repeating units: (1) A zwitterionic polymer, poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA), for increased hydrophilicity and biocompatibility, (2) a 3,4‐dihydroxy‐L‐phenylalanine (DOPA) segment which contains the catechol group, and (3) poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) for light crosslinking, which will be used to strengthen the polymer adhesion properties by providing debonding resistance. The chemical structure of the terpolymer, poly(N‐methacryloyl‐3,4‐dihydroxyl‐L‐phenylalanine‐co‐sulfobetaine methacrylate‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate) (poly(MDOPA‐co‐SBMA‐co‐PEGDMA)), synthesized following a convenient and reproducible radical polymerization was clearly confirmed by 1H NMR. The terpolymer adhesive displayed the optimal adhesion properties when containing 1.5–2.5 mol % of crosslinker, PEGDMA, according to the measured maximum adhesion strength and work of adhesion, characterized by lap shear strength tests utilizing porcine skin. The adhesive did not show cytotoxicity when tested with human embryonic kidney (HEK293A) cells. Ex vivo anastomosis experiments using porcine intestine demonstrated that the new poly(MDOPA‐co‐SBMA‐co‐PEGDMA) is a promising biomedical adhesive which successfully prevents leakage from the sutured intestinal tissue. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Currently available biomedical adhesives are mainly engineered to have one function (i.e., providing mechanical support for the repaired tissue). To improve the performance of existing bioadhesives and broaden their applications in medicine, numerous multifunctional bioadhesives are reported in the literature. These adhesives can be categorized as passive or active by design. Passive multifunctional bioadhesives contain inherent compositions and structural designs that can carry out additional functions without added external influences. These adhesives exhibit new functionalities such as antimicrobial properties, self‐healing abilities, the ability to promote cellular ingrowth, and the ability to be reshaped. Conversely, active multifunctional bioadhesives respond to environmental changes (e.g., pH, temperature, electricity, light, and biomolecule concentration), which initiate a change in the adhesive to release encapsulated drugs or to activate or deactivate the bioadhesive for interfacial binding. This review article highlights recent advances in multifunctional bioadhesives.

Design of Active Interfaces Using Responsive Molecular Components

Responsive interfaces are interfaces that show a defined and reversible change in physical properties in response to external stimuli. Typically, responsive interfaces result from the immobilization of responsive molecular components at the interface that translate a nanoscale signal into a macroscopic effect. Responsive interfaces can also be obtained if the topology of the interface can be reversibly changed using an external stimulus. As the surface of any material is its connection to the environment, responsive interfaces provide opportunities for interactive materials which are not only able to change properties upon demand, but also sense their environment and act autonomously. The application of responsive molecular components at interfaces, however, requires chemical and physical compatibility with the material surface of interest, posing a challenge not least in the retention of the responsive functionality. The state of the art in "active" interfaces which display responsive wettability, permeability, or adhesion is discussed, with a particular emphasis on microscale and nanoscale patterning since patterned interfaces can give rise to unique material properties. Finally, perspectives in the development of responsive interfaces, as well as promising approaches for bypassing the most prominent challenges are discussed.
