“…Therefore, LLLI precondition has a mitigating influence on the deleterious effects of the free radicals in the infarcted myocardium. Our findings are mainly in agreement with recent study by Zhu et al [38], who observed that LLLI at 660 nm wavelength improved functional recovery of the cold‐stored rat heart possibly via conservation of ATP and antioxidant enzyme activity. Although there is strong evidence of cardioprotective effects of LLLI, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.…”

“…It can be assumed that this elevation reflects the increase of catalase in the myocar- dium at a short time interval after MI by LELI, as was previously shown for isolated cardiomyocytes. 12 This elevated antioxidant activity in the dog ischemic myocardium is probably one of the mechanisms inhibiting cardiomyocyte degeneration and asserting a cardioprotective effect on these cells in the ischemic zone. The inverse significant correlation between the level of catalase after MI and infarct size in the dogs further supports the assumption that the antioxidant level in the ischemic myocardium at the early phase after LAD occlusion plays a major role in the complex processes that eventually lead to scar formation.…”

“…11 The effects of LELI on cardiac cells have been studied to a limited extent. Zhu et al 12 recently showed that argon dye laser (660-nm wavelength) improves the functional recovery of cold-stored, isolated rat cardiomyo-cytes. In the present study, we investigated the possibility that LELI may also attenuate the process of scar tissue formation after chronic occlusion of the LAD in rats and dogs.…”

“…We speculate that LEVL evokes a cellular adaptation mechanism and calcium signaling, which might explain previously obtained results such as improving functional preservation of isolated rat hearts by low energy photoirradiation (31), reduction of infarct size of the hearts of dogs (68), and enhancing recovery of ischemic damage in cardiomyocytes (69).…”

“…We chose cardiomyocytes as low energy photoirradiation has been found to improve heart preservation for transplantation (31). In addition, cardiomyocytes possess low levels of antioxidant enzymes, thus being more sensitive to light and ROS.…”
