The post-treatment samples were tested for toxicity on lettuce Lactuca sativa germination to verify the effect of the advanced oxidation process employed. The most efficient treatment determined in the preliminary study was photo-Fenton assisted by sunlight radiation. Under the best conditions developed and analyzed with the experimental designs, a 99% degradation of the chromophore groups was achieved, and a 98.72% decrease in chemical oxygen demand, in 120 min. The experimental data were well represented by the nonlinear kinetic model proposed by Chan and Chu with values of R 2 > 0.95. The toxicity test results demonstrated a decrease in the root growth of the species Lactuca sativa. The results demonstrate that the photo-Fenton system assisted by sunlight Abstract Effluents from the food industry regularly contain synthetic dyes that cause damage to ecosystems and water bodies. The present work aimed to evaluate homogeneous advanced oxidation processes for the mixed degradation of food dyes blue 1 and yellow 6. Through preliminary studies of advanced oxidation processes by photolysis, UV/H 2 O 2 , Fenton, and photo-Fenton, applying UV-C, artificial solar (sunlight), and natural solar radiation, the system with the best performance for the integral optimization of the treatment was determined. Studies on the direct application of the photo-Fenton process (PFOP) to disinfect and decontaminate textile wastewater are rare. The output of the artificial neural network (ANN) models applied to the wastewater of a textile factory producing woven fabrics, which is used to assess the efficiency of the PFOP process, are investigated and compared with each other in this study. The highest PFOP efficiency is obtained at a pH of 3. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS) and color removal rates are 94%, 90%, and 96%, respectively. The data are modeled with ANNs and nonlinear external input autoregressive ANNs (NARX-ANN) using the MATLAB R2020a software program. Both Levenberg-Marquardt (trainlm) and scaled conjugate gradient (trainscg) algorithms are employed in the ANN and NARX-ANN models, whereas hyperbolic tangent sigmoid (Tansig) and logistic sigmoid (Logsig) functions are superimposed on the hidden layer in the ANN model, and Tansig functions are superimposed on the NARX-ANN model. It is determined that the developed ANN models are more effective in estimating the PFOP efficiency. The mean squared error is 0.000 953, and the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) is 0.96 661.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a critical parameter in water quality management due to interaction with disinfectants, leading to the formation of potentially carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) during water treatment. Forest ecosystems are key contributors of DOC to surface waters, stemming from soil leachate. This study focuses on the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), a common group of DBPs, following the chlorination and chloramination of soil-extracted DOC solutions under varying environmental conditions. For this purpose, soil samples from a densely forested upland watershed in Illinois, United States, were processed to extract DOC. The findings indicate notably higher production of THMs through chlorination compared to chloramination. It was observed that total trihalomethane (TTHM) levels significantly elevated with increases in DOC concentration, reaction time, and the dose of disinfectant in both treatment processes. The presence of bromide in the DOC influenced the concentration of brominated THMs (Br-THMs) during chlorination, whereas pH and temperature exhibited a moderate effect on TTHM formation. Furthermore, the study revealed that, except for pH and Specific Ultraviolet Absorbance (SUVA), all tested water quality indicators (DOC, total dissolved solids, turbidity, and UV254) exhibited a strong positive correlation with TTHM levels during chlorination. In contrast, these parameters displayed a moderate to weak correlation with TTHM levels in the chloramination process, suggesting their predictive value for TTHM formation is more pronounced in chlorination treatments.
