The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) on both Pt/TiO2/C and Pt/C‐based electrodes can be photo‐enhanced by illuminating the electrodes with UV light. This fact has called into question the role of TiO2 in the photo‐enhancement of MOR when Pt is present. To examine this further, we have studied the change in the photo‐enhancement of methanol electro‐oxidation with Pt surface area. For each catalyst, there was greater MOR activity in the presence of UV‐irradiation. However, upon potential cycling, there was a faster decline in MOR activity in the presence of UV‐irradiation compared to the MOR activity in the dark. A linear relation between the decay in methanol oxidation current with the decay in Pt surface area for both catalysts was observed. This strongly suggests that irradiation enhances the methanol oxidation process on the Pt surface. When TiO2 is present, it has a synergetic electronic effect that further enhances the oxidation process on the Pt surface.

The degradation of fossil fuel and worse environmental conditions leads to the emergence of hybrid semiconductor (SC) nanomaterials as photocatalysts. Hybrid SCs have interesting physical, mechanical, optical, chemical, and electronic characteristics. Due to these properties’ absorption of light and transfer of charge takes place frequently and hence act as multifunctional surface. These materials should be attributed to their optical and electrical properties and act as multifunctional surfaces in energy production, fuel generation, environmental remediation, sensing, etc. When SCs combine with noble, non‐noble metal, metal oxide, and some carbon‐based materials, they explore wide applications in various fields. Photocatalysis is an effective and sustainable technology to reduce or fix energy concerns and environmental corrosion problems. By going through the extensive literature review, few topics are focused on designing and working mechanisms of hybrid materials. In this way, the present review article explains the properties, surface‐interface engineering, design, and applications (energy and environmental) of hybrid nanomaterials, emphasizing their photocatalytic nature. Additionally, the appealing directions, scientific challenges, and the reasons behind the poor stability of Hybrid SC photocatalyst nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications are discussed. Finally, the concluding remarks and the current challenges with future prospects in this domain are highlighted.

The Combination of Hydrogen and Methanol Production through Artificial Photosynthesis—Are We Ready Yet?

Because 100 % quantum efficiency for the photosynthetic production of H2 from H2O under visible illumination has been achieved recently, the oxidation of H2O to O2 remains the bottleneck to the overall water‐splitting reaction. Oxidation of CH4 to CH3OH might be combined with water reduction instead, so that H2 and CH3OH chemical fuels can be simultaneously produced through a one‐step process under solar illumination. This combination would be a promising approach towards a more sustainable future of chemistry, in which developing different strategies for artificial photosynthesis is of paramount importance. By using free and adsorbed HO. radicals on the semiconductor surface, CH4 can be activated to H3C. radicals and converted into CH3OH, respectively, with great selectivity up to 100 %. The present lack of efficient photosynthetic systems for the formation of H2 and CH3OH from abundant H2O and CH4 motivates future research for basic science and industrial applications.
