Photo‐cured organic–inorganic hybrid composites of acrylated castor oil and methacrylate‐substituted polysilsesquioxane

Abstract: Acrylated castor oil (ACO) was synthesized by the reaction of castor oil and acryloyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine. The 1 H-NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectral analyses of ACO showed that the hydroxy groups of castor oil are completely esterified and that the number of acrylate groups per triglyceride is 2.56. The ACO was photo-cured with methacrylate-substituted polysilsesquioxane (ME-PSQ) prepared from 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate and tetramethylammonium hydroxide in the ACO/ME… Show more

“…FI‐IR spectrum of ACO showed the stretching vibration absorption peaks of acrylate ester CO at 1,743, 1,723 cm −1 and stretching absorption peak of the vinyl attached to carbonyl group at 1,637 cm −1 . 1 H‐NMR and FT‐IR results are similar to those reported by Shibata et al .…”

“…The number of acrylate groups was about 2.56 per ACO molecule. In this article, ACO was prepared by the reaction of castor oil with acryloyl chloride similar with the reference . ACO as a crosslinking monomer in the grafting reaction could form crosslinked copolymer with BA.…”

“…The cACO/CIA composites showed higher flexural modulus and strength than cACO/HSA composites did, suggesting that the matrix polymer is reinforced with the homogeneously distributed supramolecular fibrous network of CIA in case of cACO/CIA composites. When compared with the flexural strength and modulus (2.5 MPa, 40.8 MPa) of our previously reported cACO/ME‐PSQ 20/3 organic–inorganic hybrid composite [19], cACO/CIA 20/3 supramolecular composite had much higher strength and modulus (5.7 MPa, 94.2 MPa).…”

“…In the past studies, CO has been widely used as a feedstock of thermosetting resins such as polyurethane and alkyd resin [8–18]. Recently, we have reported the synthesis of acrylated castor oil (ACO) by the reaction of CO and acryloyl chloride as a new photo‐curable bio‐based acryl resin and the properties of the organic–inorganic hybrid composite of photo‐cured ACO with methacrylate‐substituted polysilsesquioxane (ME‐PSQ) [19]. Regarding the CO‐based green composites, Mistri et al reported the green composites composed of maleated CO and jute fibers [20].…”
