Following last year's precedent this section of Annual Reports will review not only recent progress in radiochemistry, including isotope production and environmental aspects, but also in the production of radiopharmaceuticals and their use in nuclear medicine for imaging. Radiation chemistry (unless related to the stability of labelled molecules), the use of nuclear activation analysis and the inorganic chemistry of elements that are by their nature, radioactive are all excluded. HighlightsThe IAEA published 1 the results of a wide ranging review of nuclear measurements. Conferences held during 2005 which covered progress in radiochemistry, included the '4th all Polish Conference on Radiochemistry and Nuclear Chemistry' 2 and the '7th Nuclear and Radiochemistry Symposium' 3 whilst a more focused meeting dealt with the production and application of labelled compounds 4 in the oil industry. A couple of very interesting articles appeared during 2005 questioning what exactly is meant by many fundamental 'radiochemical' concepts 5 such as 'specific activity' and 'carrier-free' and indeed how the specific activities 6 of 'no-carrier-added' materials can be determined. The Proceedings of the 16th Symposium on Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry 7 covers advances made in radiopharmaceutical development and applications while the Proceedings of the Society of Nuclear Medicine 8 and the European Society of Nuclear Medicine 9 cover both radiopharmaceutical development and the application in diagnosis and therapy. A critical review has been published 10 on the application of positron emitting nuclides for use as radiopharmaceuticals.

The purpose of this study is the synthesis and study of a chelating sorbent for the extraction of ions of non-ferrous and noble metals. To achieve this goal, a sulfur-containing chelating sorbent based on carbamide, formaldehyde, and dithizone was synthesized and studied. The optimal conditions for the synthesis of the sorbent have been determined and studies have been carried out on the influence of the molar ratios of the starting materials on the composition, and physicochemical properties of the synthesized sorbent. The optimum temperature of polycondensation was taken as 90 °C, the reaction time is 2.5-3 hours, as a result, the reaction is more uniform and the exchange capacity for a 0.1 N HCl solution reaches 3.8 mg-eq/g. As a result of the studies carried out, the sorbent with the best performance was obtained at a 1: 2: 0.5 ratio of carbamide, formaldehyde, and dithizone, respectively. Based on the results of IR spectroscopy, the reaction of sorbent formation is proposed. The static exchange capacity of the synthesized sorbent for metal ions was determined, mg-eq/g: Cu (II) – 2,75; Zn (II) – 2,83; Ni (II) – 2.72; Ag (I) – 3.12

The sorption properties of solid-phase extractants (SPEs) prepared by impregnation of Taunit carbon nanotubes with adducts of diphenyl(dibutylcarbamoylmethyl)phosphine oxide (CMPO) and tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) in HNO 3 solutions were studied. The SPEs exhibit high ability to sorb U(VI), Pu(IV), Np(V), Am(III), and Eu(III) from nitric acid solutions, with good kinetic properties. The impregnation conditions and distribution coefficients of the radionuclides in their recovery from 3 M HNO 3 were determined. The possibility of preparing SPEs by Taunit impregnation in HNO 3 solutions with adducts of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctylhexylethoxymalonamide (DMDOHEMA) and with Cyphos IL-101 phosphonium ionic liquid was demonstrated.
