Phosphorus Ester Containing Mesoporous Silica as Novel High‐Effective Flame Retardant in Polyurethane and Polyester Coatings

Abstract: In this study mesoporous silica spheres (MPSs) and polyphosphoric acid based organophosphate ester flame retardant (FR material) material were synthesized and flame retardancy performance in acrylate-based polyurethanes (PUR) and polyester (PET) resins investigated. For this, both MPSs and FR material were synthesized according to literature and FR material was loaded into MPSs which takes the role of carrier. Loaded MPSs were put into UV curable PUR and PET resins and polymerized under UV radiation. Their cha… Show more

“…This migration and subsequent release not only diminish the flame retardant efficacy of the material but also contribute to environmental contamination, as evidenced by some prior studies. 33,34 Moreover, DMMP can act as a plasticizer within the matrix which, upon higher concentrations, adversely affects the mechanical properties of the material. This observation underscores the existing challenge in harnessing the flame-retardant potential of high-content organophosphorus liquid flame retardants without compromising the material's integrity and environmental safety.…”

“…Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is used in all aspects of life because of its excellent corrosion resistance, ease of processing, and excellent mechanical properties [1][2][3]. However, its highly flammable burning process releases a lot of smoke, which may endanger humans [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Phosphorus-based flame retardants (FR) are an important branch of the flame retardant family. In order to comply with the development concept of a green environment [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], they are widely used in all kinds of plastics due to their non-toxic properties. Phosphorus flame retardants can release PO or PO 2 ·radicals in the gas phase when burning, capturing the H and OH released when the material burns, thus blocking the chain combustion reaction.…”
