Phosphorus and potassium balance in soil under crop rotation and fertilization

Abstract: The use of crop rotation and manure application can provide sustainability for an agricultural production system by improving soil quality and increasing nutrient use efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mineral, organic and mineral+organic fertilization on grain yield and on soil phosphorus and potassium balance, in two crop systems under no-till, with and without rotation of cover crops. The experiment was carried out from 2006 to 2008 on a clayey Rhodic Hapludox in Marechal Cândido Rondon,… Show more

“…The higher uptake in M TSP -F at seedling stage in the LRS of both years was due to the high solubility of TSP fertilizer and consequently availability in soil (Table 2). P is immediately released into soil with addition of mineral fertilizers (Steiner et al, 2012). Wasonga et al (2008) found significantly (P < 0.05) increases in P uptake by maize varieties following TSP application.…”

“…Determination of P balances: Soil P balance (kg ha -1 yr -1 ) was calculated after the second year of the experiment as the sum of the total amount of P nutrient applied as fertilizer (kg ha -1 ), the change in the amount of P in a layer of soil to 0.20 m depth (kg ha -1 ) and the total amount exported in harvested grain (kg ha -1 ), all divided by the duration of the assessment period (years), according to the following equation (Steiner et al, 2012;Raij et al, 1997);…”

“…Phosphorus availability is not only affected by nutrient management, but also cropping system (Nunes et al, 2011), which can help with the sustainability of agricultural production (Steiner et al, 2012). Phosphorus in plant residues from previous crop may be utilized by following crops (Noack et al, 2012).…”

“…However, the available K pool is relatively low and corresponds to crop demand during only a few years of intense cropping and the release of K from nonexchangeable sources can contribute significantly to plant K nutrition in some soils in the short and medium term (SIMONSSON et al, 2007;STEINER et al, 2012;ROSOLEM et al, 2012). When solution and exchangeable K are reduced to low levels by plant uptake, non-exchangeable K can be released from clay interlayers (BORTOLUZZI et al, 2005).…”
