Phosphor modeling and characterization

Abstract: Abstract. The prevalent method to develop a phosphor recipe (based on trial and error) to create white light with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) is time-consuming. We developed a new method for determining parametric values in a simulated phosphor model through systematic testing of phosphor samples and optimizing the parameter values with ray-trace software. The model employs Mie volume scattering together with absorption and down-conversion. A double-integrating sphere spectral measurement system was cons… Show more

“…An alternative to the previously discussed ab initio approach is to use statistical methods [165]. Ray tracers (e.g., LightTools [166,167]) allow accurate simulation of light-matter interaction at surfaces. Provided the number of rays is sufficiently large, statistical processes such as the diffuse reflectance can also be approximated satisfactorily [146,[168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181].…”

“…However, these studies lack experimental data to validate their models and few people take TM-30-15 method to evaluate and optimize WLED's color performance. In this paper, we will introduce the optical models of red and green phosphors films based on Mie scattering [12,13] and Monte Carlo ray tracing [14,15] that can simulate the color performance of WLED at different phosphor concentrations, evaluate the simulated spectrum by TM-30-15 method, and then validate it by experiments.…”

“…To obtain the precise optical modeling for pcLEDs, Zhu et al used a double integrating sphere system to investigate the radiant power of the transmitted and reflected light of a YAG phosphor layer illuminated by a fiber-guided source [17]. Wu et al also measured the radiant flux of the transmitted and reflected light of series phosphor layers with a double integrating sphere system, and then used the result to optimize the Mie parameters in optical simulation [18]. Kang et al [19] developed a 1-D model to calculate the light absorption and conversion in the phosphor layer and Hu et al improved this model by further considering the scattering effect [20], [21].…”
