Phosphonitrilic Compounds. IV. Preparation and Polymerization of Allylaminophosphonitrile Compounds1,2

Abstract: As part of our• program on the synthesis of antiradiation drugs we set out to prepare two short-chain aminooxyalkanethiols, H2NO(CH2)"SH ( = 2 or 3). Pre-(1) Presented at the 148th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Chicago, 111., Sept. 1964.(2) This project was sponsored by the office of the Surgeon General, U. S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (Contract DA-49-193-M D-2047), whose generous support is gratefully acknowledged.

“…Freshly distilled 2-(2-propenyl)pentafluorocyclotriphosphazene (I) and purified vinyl benzyl chloride (11) were added in various mole ratios to thick walled test tubes containing 0.1% benzoyl peroxide initiator. The tubes were flushed several times with dry nitrogen, stoppered with rubber bulbs, and put into an oil bath heated to 80 f 5 OC for 36 h. Following polymerization, the pale yellow gels were dissolved in 10-15 mL of acetone and filtered in order to remove any insoluble material.…”

“…However, initial experiments indicated t h a t I could be induced t o undergo free radical vinyl copolymerization with styrene derivatives. Therefore, a series of control experiments were carried out, in which t h e mole ratio of vinylbenzyl chloride(11) t o the propenyl phosphazene in the monomer feed was varied. This allows one t o produce a range of copolymers with variable phosphazene content.…”

“…Poly‐ and cyclophosphazenes comprise a broad, versatile class of compounds with alternating phosphorus and nitrogen atoms 1–3. Starting from hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, various nucleophiles, like alcohols and amines, may substitute the halogen atoms and lead to a great variety of derivatives 4–6. Cyclophosphazenes with modified properties have been used as monomers for inorganic high molecular weight polymers, applied for example as bioactive,7 flame‐retardant8 and optical materials 9.…”
