The last five years have seen many advances in the chemistry of phospholes. Motivating much of the work has been the potential for discovering valuable applications of phospholes, especially as ligands in metal coordination compounds designed for use as homogeneous catalysts, and in the field of electro-optical substances. This review covers the research in the synthesis, properties and applications of phospholes that has been published since the last comprehensive review by the author in 1999. While prepared for the specialist, the review is designed to introduce some of the aspects of phosphole chemistry to the general reader.

Electronegativity Versus Lone Pair Shape: A Comparative Study of Phosphaferrocenes and Azaferrocenes

The electron localization function (ELF), calculated at the DFT/B3LYP level of theory, has been used to analyze various phosphaferrocenes and azaferrocenes. The analysis of the bonding situation and electronic structure in the complexes reveals the importance of the shape of the heteroelement lone pair. Thus, the electron-withdrawing capability of the heteroatom-substituted ring is not only a consequence of electronegativity but also a result of the extension of the lone pair. Our data allow a model of the electrophilic reactivity of these complexes to be proposed.

Use of (η⁴-1-Azabuta-1,3-diene)tricarbonyliron as a Substitute for Cyclopentadiene in the Synthesis of Sandwich and Half-Sandwich Compounds

The azadiene-iron complex (η4-1-azabuta-1,3-diene)tricarbonyliron (1) acts as a substitute for cyclopentadiene. New sandwich and half-sandwich compounds 2−9 are prepared. Refluxing 1 affords two diasteromeric bis(azaferracyclopentadienyl)iron(II) compounds 2 and 3. Reaction of 1 with [CpFe(CO)2]2, Re(CO)5BF4, and Mn2(CO)10 yields half-sandwich compounds 6, 7, and 8, respectively. Photochemical reaction of 8 with PPh3 gives a PPh3-substituted derivative 9. The molecular structures of 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods.
