Phonological Deterioration in Adults with an Acquired Severe Hearing Impairment

Abstract: Andersson U, Lyxell B. Phonological deterioration in adults with an acquired severe hearing impairment. Scand Audiol 1998; 27 Suppl 49: 93-100.The study examined the phonological processing skills in a group of adults who have acquired a severe hearing loss in adult life. These severely hearing-impaired individuals performed at a significantly lower level on the rhyme judgement tasks and the letter span task, but on a par with the control group on other cognitive tests. A correlation analysis showed that durat… Show more

“…i.e., due to an age-related loss in hearing (Andersson & Lyxell 1998, Andersson 2001, Hällgren et al, 2001). In hearing-impaired patients, the auditory portion of the sensory-perceptual system may be adversely affected, which leads to difficulties in analyzing and retrieving information from acoustic signals and results in an incomplete auditory sensory signal in the form of a false 24 Background signal to the WM.…”

“…The main focus in the present thesis is on car drivers with age-related HL. WM, LTM and EFs are involved since previous research has shown the effects of age (e.g., McDowd & Shaw, 2000;Verhaeghen et al, 2003) and HL (e.g., Andersson & Lyxell 1999;Lin et al, , 2013Rönnberg et al, 2011) on these systems. Cognitive factors such as perception and decision making is not actively examined even though effects of aging have been observed in previous studies (e.g., Johnson, 1989;Kennedy, Taylor, Reade, & Yesavage, 2010).…”

“…For example, a relationship between severe to profound HL and deficiency in certain aspects of phonological processing has been demonstrated and suggested to come from a gradual loss of specificity of phonological representations (Andersson, 2002;Andersson & Lyxell 1999;Lyxell, Andersson, Borg, & Ohlson 2003;Rönnberg et al, 2011;Classon, 2013). Andersson (2002) concluded that specific aspects of the phonological system deteriorate in the HL population as a function of auditory deprivation.…”
