Phone2Cloud: Exploiting computation offloading for energy saving on smartphones in mobile cloud computing

Abstract: With prosperity of applications on smartphones, energy saving for smartphones has drawn increasing attention. In this paper we devise Phone2Cloud, a computation offloading-based system for energy saving on smartphones in the context of mobile cloud computing. Phone2Cloud offloads computation of an application running on smartphones to the cloud. The objective is to improve energy efficiency of smartphones and at the same time, enhance the application's performance through reducing its execution time. In this w… Show more

“…In the offline mode, the application was executed on mobile and in online mode the intensive components of the application were sent to the cloud. Xia et al [3] tried to improve the applications' execution time on smart phone and save energy for smart phones by offloading the computation of application from mobile phone to cloud. The framework is a semiautomatic offloading system since the application is manually modified to run on cloud and an offloading proxy is used to send and receive information from cloud.…”

“…With prosperity of applications on smart-phones, energy saving for smart phones has drawn in-creasing attention. The paper by Xia et al (2014) entitled "Phone2Cloud: Exploiting Computation Offloading for Energy Saving on Smartphones in Mobile Cloud Computing" introduces Phone2Cloud, a computation offloading-based system for energy saving on smart phones in the context of mobile cloud computing. The main idea of Phone2Cloud is to offload computation of an application running on smart phones to the cloud.…”

“…Kiran can be improved by compressing data before offloading to the Cloud in low bandwidth networks. Phone2Cloud [21] use a naive history based method to predict average execution time of an application on smartphone. It monitor network bandwidth and leverages average CPU workload got from the resource monitor and input size of the application to predict execution time using the history log.…”
