Phonatory breathing strategies in professionally trained singers – a dynamic MRI study

“…In contrast, a more thorax related respiratory pattern was utilized by male singers whose vocal fold vibratory patterns are generally characterized by higher glottal airflow, larger amplitude and thus maximum flow declination rate (MFDR; Sulter and Wit, 1996 ). In this context it is very interesting to see that in a single subject study, a professional female singer increased her thorax inspiration by about 20% when she switched from Western classically style to belting ( Traser et al, 2020b ), a contemporary music singing style which is characterized by a higher degree of glottal adduction ( Sundberg et al, 1993 ) and higher vertical laryngeal position ( Echternach et al, 2014 ).
