Понятие оптимизма в его кантовском значении середины XVIII в. лишь изредка оказывалось предметом пристального внимания кантоведов. Оно уходит своими истоками в «Теодицею» Г. В. Лейбница и споры о том, является ли действительный мир наилучшим из всех возможных. В данной статье, представляющей собой первую часть двухчастного цикла, исследуется исторический контекст возникновения кантовского приглашения к лекциям 1759 г. «Опыт некоторых рассуждений об оптимизме». Кратко очерчены условия конкурса Берлинской академии наук на 1755 г. о сравнении систем А. Поупа и Г. В. Лейбница и об оценке оптимизма, а также показаны филологические трудности, связанные с переводом на французский строки Поупа «Whatever is, is right» в конкурсном задании, равно как и с ее переводом на немецкий и русский языки. Продемонстрирована роль Вольтера и его «Поэмы на разрушение Лиссабона», а также повести «Кандид, или Оптимизм» в изменении post factum восприятия итогов конкурса и появлении новых оттенков у понятия оптимизма. На основании эпистолярного наследия И. Канта сделан вывод о том, что, несмотря на всеевропейское значение землетрясения в Лиссабоне в 1755 г. для восприятия проблемы оптимизма и наилучшего мира, кёнигсбергский философ в 1759 г. подходит к обсуждению данного вопроса в рамках полемики с крузианской философией. Изложена аргументация Хр. А. Крузия против существования наилучшего мира, за существование нескольких хороших миров и выбора среди них Богом действительного мира на основе свободы противоречия (libertas contradictionis) и свободы противоположности (libertas contrarietatis), которые устраняются в учении об оптимизме.

When authors act by either publishing or non-publishing their texts, they sometimes use a language of gestures. These gestures can assist to position the author in the intellectual field. In this way some German eighteenth-century philosophers who thought against the grain of mainstream rationalism withdrew from the public sphere, using the image of the Egyptian god Harpocrates, who puts his index finger to his lips—a symbol for maintaining silence. In a sense one can thus label this kind of quietism as “harpocratism.” The essay examines the imagery and contextualizes it in three case studies from the years 1720-50. Moreover, it explores its sources in political as well as antiquarian and hermetic discourses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The essay serves as a model for defining intellectual positions not so much by their content, but rather by their practices of symbolic distancing from others, of building identities in emotional communities, and of shaping free zones of inquiry where they could flourish.
