Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag liefert einen kurzen Überblick über die Entwicklung des Englischen von einer angeblichen Nationalsprache zu einer Weltsprache, der lingua franca der Globalisierung. Er fragt nach der Rolle, die das Konzept ‚Nationalsprache' und das sich herausbildende monolinguale Paradigma für die englische Philologie im 19. Jahrhundert spielten. Der Beitrag zeigt die Instabilität und Widersprüchlichkeit der Korrelierung von Sprache, Territorium und Nationalcharakter auf und setzt sich unter Rückgriff auf sprachphilosophische Reflexionen kritisch mit Behauptungen eines ‚Sprachbesitzes' auseinander. In der postkolonialen und transkulturellen Literatur werden diese Widersprüche strategisch, nämlich als Teil einer politisierten Ästhetik, zum Vorschein gebracht. Der Gebrauch von Kreolsprachen sowie von trans-und multilingualen Strategien zielt darauf ab, nationale Ursprungsphantasie und ethnische Einheitsvorstellungen zu torpedieren und sie mit Differenz, Fremdheit und Pluralität zu konfrontieren. Postkoloniale Enteignungs-, Entgrenzungs-und Verflechtungsgeschichten geben Anlass, Vorstellungen einer Nationalliteratur und Nationalphilologie zu hinterfragen und die Rolle der Anglophone Studies im Zeichen ungleicher Globalisierungsprozesse zu reflektieren.
