Philipsburgite from the Yamato mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan

Abstract: Philipsburgite, (Cu,Zn) 5 Zn(AsO 4 ,PO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 ·H 2 O, an As analogue of kipushite, was discovered in the Yamato mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Philipsburgite occurs in the form of spherical aggregates, 0.5 mm in diameter, with bright green in color. It is associated with malachite and cornwallite in cavities of the oxidized rocks, which consist of quartz and goethite. Spherical philipsburgite consists of platy crystals, 100 μm in length and 1 μm in thickness, with sharp termination. The empirical for… Show more

“…Recently, rare minerals preisingerite, which has an ideal formula of Bi 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 O(OH), and philipsburgite (Cu,Zn) 5 Zn(AsO 4 ,PO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 ·H 2 O were found at the Yamato mine by Ohnishi et al . () and Shirose and Uehara (), respectively.…”

“…The Daido deposit, which is the principal ore occurrence in the skarn, consists mostly of chalcopyrite, with lesser scheelite, galena, and bornite, and also of garnet, hedenbergite, wollastonite, diopside, calcite, epidote, vesuvianite, and quartz in veins (Ueno & Doi, ). Preisingerite (Ohnishi et al, ) and philipsburgite (Shirose & Uehara, ) were recently found and these are the first occurrences of these minerals in Japan. Nagashima et al () provided a detailed description of the ore minerals in the mine, and shed light on the Bi–Ag–Co–Ni–As–Sn mineralization.…”

“…In the Ofuku region, the geology and mineral occurrences from ore deposits in Mine City, west of the Akiyoshi Plateau, have been studied at the Yamato, Fukurei, and Yamagami mines (Kato, ; Suzuki, ; Ueno & Doi, ; Sekine, ; Miyake & Akatsuka, ; Murakami et al, ; Shibuya, ; Ohnishi et al, ; Shirose & Uehara, ; Nishida, ). However, the pluton (the Ofuku pluton in this paper) has not yet been studied in detail, even though it also contributed to the formation of the deposit.…”
