Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, and DOPA Are bona fide Substrates for Bambusa oldhamii BoPAL4

Abstract: Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) links the plant primary and secondary metabolisms, and its product, trans-cinnamic acid, is derived into thousands of diverse phenylpropanoids. Bambusa oldhamii BoPAL4 has broad substrate specificity using L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, and L-3,4-dihydroxy phenylalanine (L-DOPA) as substrates to yield trans-cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, and caffeic acid, respectively. The optimum reaction pH of BoPAL4 for three substrates was measured at 9.0, 8.5, and 9.0, respectively. The op… Show more

“…The resulting naringenin chalcone is converted to (2 S )-naringenin by the enzyme chalcone isomerase (CHI). In literature, it has been reported that (2 S )-naringenin could be obtained from phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) using 4CL, CHS, and CHI enzymes [ 30 , 31 ].…”

“…The enzyme antioxidant system is the first line of defense in plants that neutralizes ROS; these enzymes include SOD, CAT, APX, and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) [67,68]. There are other enzymes that are not classified as antioxidants; however, they are indirectly involved, and one of them is PAL, which catalyzes the first reaction of the phenylpropanoid pathway, compounds with high antioxidant capacities [69]. Nonenzymatic antioxidants, whether hydrophilic (phenols, GSH, and ascorbic acid) or lipophilic (carotenoids), are the second line of defense and are responsible for inhibiting the production of damage caused by the oxidative reaction [67,70].…”

“…Bambusa oldhamii , green bamboo, is a perennial plant in the tropics and subtropics, and bamboo shoot is an economic vegetable in far-eastern Asia [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ]. Bamboo is one of the fast-growth timber plants, which are controlled by plant hormones, especially cytokinins [ 45 ].…”
