Phenoxycycloalkylimine Ligated Zirconium Complexes for Ethylene Polymerization:  Formation of Vinyl-Terminated Low Molecular Weight Polyethylenes with High Efficiency

Abstract: Bis(phenoxyimine)Zr complexes 1 − 8 containing a series of cycloalkyl groups on the imine-N's were synthesized (1:  cyclopropyl; 2, 3:  cyclobutyl; 4:  cyclopentyl; 5, 7:  cyclohexyl; 6, 8:  2-methylcyclohexyl). X-ray crystallographic analyses suggested that complexes 3, 5, and 8 assume an octahedral coordination geometry with a trans-phenoxy-O, cis-imine-N, and cis-Cl disposition and that the cycloalkyl groups on the imine-N's influence steric environments around the chlorine bound sites (i.e., potential poly… Show more

“…Alternatively, Zr _ FI catalysts incorporating cycloalkyl groups at the R 1 positions, combined with MAO, provide vinyl-terminated PEs, with high efficiency 83) . For example, FI catalysts 10-14 with MAO at 25 transform ethylene into vinyl-terminated low molecular weight PEs (Mw 2000-14,000, vinyl selectivity 90-96%) while maintaining higher catalytic activities than Cp2ZrCl2/MAO (28 kg-PE/mmol-cat./h) under the same conditions ( Table 4).…”

“…The above Al-PEs and vinyl-terminated PEs can be converted to a variety of functionalized PEs 84) . For instance, with hydrogen peroxide oxidation using Na2WO4 as a catalyst, a vinyl-terminated PE (Mw 2000, Mw/Mn 1.7, vinyl group 95%, Tm 122 ) is readily converted to the corresponding epoxy-terminated PE (Tm 121 ) in practically quantitative yield 83) . In addition, a diol-terminated PE (Tm 121 ) is obtained by the in-situ hydrolysis of the above epoxy-terminated PE using aqueous 2-propanol.…”

“…1), which are very active catalysts for a-olefin polymerisation [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Depending on the ligand design, the catalysts showed different behaviours in ethylene and propylene polymerisation, and the ligands strongly influenced catalyst parameters such as activity, polymerisation mechanism, and polymer properties including molecular weight and morphology [5].…”
