Phenotypic Heterogeneity of the Endothelium

Abstract: Abstract-Endothelial cells, which form the inner cellular lining of blood vessels and lymphatics, display remarkable heterogeneity in structure and function. This is the first of a 2-part review focused on phenotypic heterogeneity of blood vessel endothelium. This review provides an historical perspective of our understanding of endothelial heterogeneity, discusses the scope of phenotypic diversity across the vascular tree, and addresses proximate and evolutionary mechanisms of endothelial cell heterogeneity. … Show more

“…The endothelium plays a pivotal role in the homeostasis of tissues and small changes in the function of ECs might impact the functionality of organs or even the health of an entire organism. 15 In addition to examining toxic effects, an evaluation of PEGylated AuNPs on EC pro-inflammatory induction is necessary. An increased expression of cell adhesion molecules leads to leukocyte adhesion to the activated endothelium and results in transmigration into the tissue.…”

“…26,27 EC phenotypes vary between different organs, as well as between different tissues within the same organ. In addition, the gene expression profile of ECs can be significantly influenced by the tumor.…”

“…Local microenvironment is a major participating factor in establishment of endothelial cell heterogeneity, to an extent that when they are removed from their native environment and grown in culture, endothelial cells undergo phenotypic drift and lose many of their organ-specific characteristics (22)(23)(24). Analyses of the activation pattern of endothelial specific promoters in vitro and in vivo also reflect the heterogeneity of endothelial cells.…”
