Phenotypic Heterogeneity of Lymphoma of the Skin

Abstract: We studied surface markers present in 56 cases of lymphoma of the skin by immunohistochemical staining, using the ABC (avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex) and PAP (peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex) methods. Of these cases, 49 were T-cell lymphoma and 7 were B-cell lymphoma. Ten of the 49 cases of T-cell lymphoma were adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). Twenty-five of 31 cases of T-cell lymphoma except ATL analyzed by the ABC method showed a helper/inducer phenotype (Leu2a-,Leu3a+), two cases showed a suppress… Show more

“…There is evidence that in certain situations the normal CD4+ cells may coexpress CD8 and interleukin-4 is able to induce the expression of CD8 on T CD4+ clones [13]. Peripheral T lymphocytes with CD4+/CD8+ phenotype have been described in some solid and hematologic malignancies [14, 15]. However the double positive CD4/CD8 phenotype is extremely rare in mycosis fungoides [7, 8].…”

“…The immunohistochemical characteristics of the skin-infiltrating cells were analyzed using monoclonal antibodies by the ABC method on cryostat sections and by the PAP method on paraffin sections, as described previously (8). Monoclonal antibodies, listed in Table 1, were purchased from commercial sources.…”

“…CL span a wide array of clinical aspects and histological subtypes which correspond to clonal T or B cells, characterized by their expression of lymphoid cell markers, homing and migrating mainly in the skin [2]. In CTCL, the CD4/CD8 ratio has been associated with the tumor stage of the disease [3]. The granulomatous slack skin is an extremely rare subtype of MF characterized by epidermal focal infiltration of small atypical T cells with a CD3 + , CD4 + , CD8 - phenotype [4].…”
