Phenotypic Characterization of CD4+ T Lymphocytes in Periportal Fibrosis Secondary to Schistosomiasis

Abstract: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that affects about 166 million people around the world. It is estimated that 5%–10% of individuals with schistosomiasis develop severe forms of the disease, which are characterized by pulmonary hypertension, ascites, periportal fibrosis, and other significant complications. The chronic phase of the disease is associated with a Th2 type immune response, but evidence also suggests there are roles for Th1 and Th17 in the development of severe disease. The aim of this study w… Show more

“…It is known that T lymphocytes are essential for immune responses against Schistosoma species. 31 In the case of schistosomiasis, the granulomatous inflammation and the liver pathology are critically regulated by the Th1, Th2, Th17, and regulatory T (Treg) responses. 32,33 We detected changes in T-lymphocyte immune regulation in the spleen of mice injected with Sj16-KO eggs by flow cytometry.…”

“…Schistosome infection leads to significant changes in immune function in patients, with the Th1 response dominating in the acute phase, but gradually shifting to a Th2 response as the schistosomes mature over time 16,18,22,37 . And it in turn gradually diminishes with the formation of chronic granulomas 16,22 .…”
