Phenotypic assessment and mapped markers for H31, a new wheat gene conferring resistance to Hessian fly (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae)

Abstract: A new source of resistance to the highly virulent and widespread biotype L of the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), was identified in an accession of tetraploid durum wheat, Triticum turgidum Desf., and was introgressed into hexaploid common wheat, Triticum aestivum L. Genetic analysis and deletion mapping revealed that the common wheat line contained a single locus for resistance, H31, residing at the terminus of chromosome 5BS. H31 is the first Hessian fly-resistance gene to be placed on 5BS, making i… Show more

“…A set of 18 barley ESTs and 3 RFLPs mapped in distal position on 5HS (Stein et al 2007) was kindly provided by N. Stein (Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research-IPK, Gatersleben, Germany). The primer pair F-59 TCCTACCTCCATTCCCCTTT 39 and R-59 TCAAAAT GAATCGGAAGGGT 39 was used to amplify the STS-E41M48 marker utilizing the PCR conditions described in Williams et al (2003).…”

“…To date, 33 major HF resistance (HFR) genes have been identified from wheat and its relatives (Ratcliffe and Hatchett 1997;Harris et al 2003;Martín-Sánchez et al 2003;McIntosh et al 2003;Williams et al 2003;Liu et al 2005a;Sardesai et al 2005). Many of these resistance genes have been mapped to various wheat chromosomes across three genomes.…”

“…Resistance to Hessian fly attack is achieved through R gene-mediated resistance (Hatchett and Gallun, 1970). So far, 32 distinct Hessian fly resistance genes have been identified (Williams et al, 2003;Sardesai et al, 2005a). Interactions with Hessian fly elicit two types of responses in wheat: susceptibility to the larvae, a compatible interaction; and resistance to the larvae, an incompatible interaction.…”
