The aim of this research was to study the genetic and sex effects on morphometric traits, carcass characteristics and biochemical composition of rabbit meat of two Algerian breeds, local population and synthetic line (ITELV2006). For this purpose, 60 animals (30 per group) from 90 d of age were used. The body weight and the morphometric traits recorded were determined using a digital weighing scale and flexible tape. At slaughter, carcass traits, and biochemical meat quality characteristics such us protein, fat, ash, moisture content and fatty acids composition were measured. The results obtained revealed that the synthetic line has higher values of morphometric measurements than the local breed. The sex factor and the interaction genotype X sex had a significant effect only on chest circumference (P < 0.05). It is also observed, that the majority of carcass characteristics were more affected by genetic than by genetics. Which body weight at slaughter of males and females derived from synthetic lines were 41% and 22% higher than local rabbits respectively. Furthermore, the new line displayed a good meat yield (60%) with a higher mean value (+ 5%) of dressing out % rather than the local one. Regarding, the proximate biochemical composition of meat, the synthetic line has shown also the highest content of protein and fat (P < 0.05). Concerning with fatty acids profile; the local breed exhibited the highest content of n3 and n6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3 and n6 PUFAs), consequently, the lower value of n-6: n-3 ratio (9.82) and the highest value of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids (PUFAs/SFAs: 0.73). Finally, it should be emphasized that the relevant differences recorded in this experiment are assumed to be primarily genetic, thus, sex might be regarded as a minor factor. The synthetic showed better characteristics due to its genetic potential. Therefore, it is recommended to be used for Algerian meat production.

Background: The identification of the relationship between the particular traits of the body development of the rabbit could help the understanding of the biological growth and the application in different areas of livestock and veterinary study. Objective. To evaluate the relationship between osteometry of the limbs, live weight (LW), hot carcass weight (HCW) and anatomical cuts; and generate equations to predict PV, PCC and anatomical cuts in New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits at different ages. Methodology. A total of 113 rabbits of seven different ages (9, 11, 14, 17, 20, 24 and 28 weeks) were used. The data obtained were LW, carcass characteristics: PCC and anatomical cuts (front, middle and back); and osteometry: length and diameter of the humerus (LH and DH), radio-ulna (LR-C and DR-C), femur (LF and DF) and tibia-fibula (LT-P and DT-P). The information was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) and linear and multiple regression models. The accuracy of the models was evaluated using the coefficients of determination (r2) and the square root of the mean square error (RCCME). Results. The correlations expressed between LW, carcass characteristics and bone lengths were higher (r= 0.90 – 0.95; p= < 0.0001) compared to diameters (r= 0.38 – 0.72; p= < 0.0001). The regression equations for PV had a RCCME that varied from 186.86 to 197.70 g using LR-C and LF. While for the PCC it presented RCCME from 130.4 to 138.58 g with LH, LR-C and DH. Regarding the anatomical cuts, the progressive order of rear, middle and front using LF and LH was RCCME= 21.66 to 25.67. The LF and LH explained 92 and 91% of the variation of the PV and PCC, although it decreased slightly in the anatomical cuts from 85 to 92%. Implications. The osteometry of the extremities reflects security in the application of equations to calculate general and particular data of body mass in the rabbit, this contribution of knowledge can be extrapolated for animal production and forensic veterinary studies. Conclusion. The close associations obtained between limb lengths (exception LT-P) with PV, PCC and anatomical cuts gave equations with high capacity to estimate these body changes of growing NZB rabbits.

Ethno- and traditional medicine have inferred that Azanza garckeana plant products possessed varying phytochemicals and pharmacological properties capable of stimulating muscular growth and cellular development. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the direct and residual effects of Azanza garckeana fruit on the growth, linear body developments and carcass composition of New Zealand White rabbit bucks. Sixty New Zealand White rabbit bucks were randomly assigned to 4 treatments of 15 bucks, replicated three times in a completely randomized design. The experimental diets were formulated and supplemented with Azanza garckeana fruit meal at 0, 100, 200 and 300g/kg respectively, representing T , T , 1 2 T and T . The study was conducted in two experimental phases, the direct and the residual 3 4 phase. At the end of each experimental phase, data were collected on the growth, linear body parameters and on the carcass compositions. Results showed that the different supplementation levels of Azanza garckeana fruit up to 300g/kg on the direct phase improved the final weights (T 2276.67g to T 2446.67g), weight gain (T 1295.22g to T 1449.89g) and 1 4 1 4 the weights of the skin (T 237.00g to T 259.00g). It also increased the weight of the forelimb 1 4 (T1 199.33g to T4 258.33g), hindlimb (T1 255.33g to T4 292.67g), backcuts (T1 189.03g to T4 564.57g), the ear lengths (11.49cm in T to 13.52cm in T ), heart girts (26.04cm in T to 1 4 1 28.00cm in T ) and the body length (36.33cm in T to 38.66cm in T ). On the residual phase, the 4 1 4 different supplementation levels of Azanza garckeana fruit reduced the weight gain (T1 215.33g to T 54.65g), dressed weights (from 2110.42g in T to 1936.83g in T ) and dressed 4 1 4 percentages (84.69% in T to 77.44% in T ); but had no significant (P>0.05) effects on the 1 4 carcass parts and on the linear body development of the rabbit bucks. It is therefore, concluded that the different supplementation levels of Azanza garckeana fruit impacted favourably on the growth of the rabbit bucks, carcass development and on the linear body growth; but had no residual effects on the carcass parts and linear body growth of the rabbit bucks.
