Phenotypic analyses of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis strains isolated in the pre- and post-epidemic period in Brazil

Abstract: Salmonella Enteritidis has caused, since the 1980s, a sustained epidemic of human infections in many countries. This study analyzed S. Enteritidis strains isolated before and after the epidemic period in Brazil regarding their capacities to survive to acid, oxidative, and high-temperature stresses, and capacity to grow in egg albumen. Moreover, the ability to invade human epithelial cells (Caco-2) and to survive inside human (U937) and chicken (HD11) macrophages was checked. Post-epidemic strains showed a bett… Show more

“…Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis is one of the leading cause of foodborne diseases posing global concerns to one health and economy [1][2][3] . In this concern, several efforts have been made to reduce the contamination and spread of Salmonella Enteritidis along the poultry production chain, since this serovar is most often associated with poultry products 4,5 .…”

“…In this concern, several efforts have been made to reduce the contamination and spread of Salmonella Enteritidis along the poultry production chain, since this serovar is most often associated with poultry products 4,5 . Besides that, the overuse of antimicrobial agents in animal husbandry, have contributed to the emergence of virulent and multidrug resistant (MDR) strains among poultry products, which represents a critical public health issue, once it could have implications on human health 2,6,7 .…”
