Phenotype diversity and phylogeny of selected Scytonema-species (Cyanoprokaryota) from SE Brazil.

Abstract: Abstract:Members of the genus Scytonema belong to prominent components of microflora of tropical and subtropical soils, but their diversity and taxonomic classification is still little known. Molecular analyses of isolated strains, but also the morphological and ecological examination of natural populations are important for the starting revisions. Here we present phenotype characteristics of fourteen morphotypes of the cyanobacterial genus Scytonema from the SE Brazil, mostly from the state São Paulo and from… Show more

“…Synechococcus sensu lato is a group of cyanobacteria with cosmopolitan distribution inhabiting almost all environments (Komárek and Anagnostidis 1998), including thermal and aerophytic habitats (Honda et al 1999;Robertson et al 2001). Although some cyanobacteria, such as Synechococcus sensu lato, lack phenotypic variability, great ecological and genetic diversity suggest that polyphyletic complexes of cryptic taxa might exist (Honda et al 1999;Robertson et al 2001;Dvořák et al 2014a, b).…”

“…These microorganisms become more populous because they are capable of forming massive growth of blooms with adverse effects on sanitation, which are aggravated when toxic cyanobacterial species are present [9]. However, the knowledge of their morphological variability (important for their identification) is still little known, which requires a thorough revision [10].…”
