Phenotype and function of circulating memory T cells in human vitiligo*

Abstract: Summary Background Vitiligo is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by the loss of melanocytes. While a T helper cell (Th)1/cytotoxic T cell (Tc)1‐skewed immune response is now well demonstrated in vitiligo, recent data suggest that the T‐cell component could be more complex, involving different combinatorial T‐cell subsets. Objectives To analyse the phenotype and function of circulating CD4+ and CD8+ memory T‐cell subsets in patients with stable and active vitiligo, in comparison with patients w… Show more

“…Previous research evidence chronicled that multiple components in PBMCs participate in the pathogenesis of vitiligo 14 . Analysis of divergently expressed miRNAs in PBMCs of patients with NSV exhibited that miR‐224‐3p and miR‐4712‐3p were upmodulated and miR‐3940‐5p expression was down‐regulated relative to the healthy controls.…”

“…In addition to indications that T helper type 1/cytotoxic T lymphocyte (Th1/Tc1) subsets are involved in vitiligo, data suggest that more heterogeneous lymphocyte subsets are also implicated in the pathogenesis of this disease [46,47]. Future studies are required to dissect the role of the different immune T-cell subsets in vitiligo before investigating therapeutic options that target them.…”

“…Many studies on patients with vitiligo focus exclusively on patients with active disease. However, Martins et al 3 show that the same immune response is found in the blood of patients with active and stable disease. Previous studies have shown the presence of T RM cells in vitiligo skin, [4][5][6] which are likely involved during flares, as previously shown in psoriasis.…”

“…In this issue of the BJD, Martins et al reaffirm the role of Th1 and Tc1 cell subsets in vitiligo disease and its production of both IFN-c and TNF-a. 3 Furthermore, their results show that the frequency of CD4 + and CD8 + circulating Th17/Tc17, Th1/Th17 and Tc1/Tc17 effector memory T-cell subsets is significantly lower in patients with vitiligo (both with stable and active disease) and psoriasis, in comparison with healthy donors. These findings suggest a possible migration of distinct T-cell subsets from the blood into the skin.…”
