Phenomenology of neutrino oscillations

Abstract: This review is focused on neutrino mixing and neutrino oscillations in the light of the recent experimental developments. After discussing possible types of neutrino mixing for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and considering in detail the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and matter, we review all existing evidence and indications in favour of neutrino oscillations that have been obtained in the atmospheric, solar and LSND experiments. We present the results of the analyses of the neutrino oscillat… Show more

“…In this paper we use the standard names for the regions in tan 2 ϑ-∆m 2 plane (see [7]): Small Mixing Angle (SMA) for 10 −4 < tan 2 ϑ < 10 −1 , 10 −8 eV 2 < ∆m 2 < 10 −3 eV 2 , (1.2)…”

“…[6] for a discussion on the probability content of this statement). Since the simplest explanation of the presence of ν µ or ν τ in the flux of solar neutrino on Earth is neutrino oscillations due to neutrino masses and mixing (see [7]), this is the second model-independent evidence in favor of neutrino mixing, after the up-down asymmetry of multi-GeV atmospheric ν µ -induced events discovered in the Super-Kamiokande experiment [8].…”

“…A possible light sterile state ν s might also participate to oscillations in extended 4ν scenarios [32]. In both cases, the standard L/E dependence of the ν µ → ν τ oscillation phase is modified by the so-called MikheyevSmirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) matter effects in the Earth.…”

“…The (ν µ , ν τ ) combination orthogonal to ν a is probed by atmospheric ν oscillations [2], with different parameters (∆m 2 , θ 23 ) [20]. The third mixing angle θ 13 , needed to complete the 3×3 mixing matrix, is constrained to be small by additional reactor results [21,22], and can be set to zero to a good approximation for our purposes.…”
