Phenomenological Reduction and Emergent Design: Complementary Methods for Leadership Narrative Interpretation and Metanarrative Development

Abstract: The author's intent in this paper is to discuss new methods for conducting research on and connecting the works of chaos and complexity theorists with interpretive, hermeneutical, and phenomenological theorists as a multiple-method mode of inquiry. He proposes a methodological design that incorporates a recursive process of phenomenological reduction to find connectedness and generate shared meanings among the research performed by leadership theorists. He also provides an emergent metanarrative method for pre… Show more

“…The researchers asked a first key informant (Gilstrap, 2007) who was related to individuals who could potentially be helping vulnerable groups during home confinement. This first key informant gave the researchers five names and their email addresses to contact them, and a sixth name was given by one of the first five participants.…”

“…The present article addresses this desideratum by investigating the experiences of participants in schools and introducing the phenomenologically oriented vignette as a research method for studying educational leadership practices. There are still only few projects (e.g., Gilstrap, 2007; Souba, 2014) addressing the topic leadership from a phenomenological perspective. This contribution will be guided by the following central research question: How can experiences of learning be empirically researched from the perspective of a phenomenology of the living body with co-experienced observations? …”

“…Analysis followed Moustakas's guidelines, which are a modification of van Kaam's method of analyzing phenomenological data (Moustakas, 1994). This method has been used in other studies and is useful by providing concise steps that enhance the rigor of the analysis process (Gilstrap, 2007;Liu, 2008).…”
