Phenolics from Defatted Black Cumin Seeds (Nigella sativa L.): Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Optimization, Comparison, and Antioxidant Activity

Abstract: An ultrasound-assisted method was used for the extraction of phenolics from defatted black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.), and the effects of several extraction factors on the total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity were investigated. To improve the extraction efficiency of phenolics from black cumin seed by ultrasonic-assisted extraction, the optimal extraction conditions were determined as follows: ethanol concentration of 59.1%, extraction temperature of 44.6 °C and extraction time of 3… Show more

“…Previous studies have experimented with various extraction methods, including the DPPH scavenging assay, for extracts of N. sativa seeds [ 71 ]. In addition to beta-sitosterol, the NS seed extract contains significant amounts of other antioxidants, such as various tocopherol and tocotrienol isomers found in the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta forms.…”

“…The same was true for the quadratic regression coefficient of the time parameter ( p > 0.05 in all of them). The interactions between temperature and time and the quadratic regression of pH and temperature all had an influence ( p < 0.05 in the three of them) on the extraction yield [ 21 ].…”

“…19 The extracts of N. sativa seeds also contain alkaloids, saponins, steroids, terpenoids, p-cymene, limonene, and fatty acids as well as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, trace minerals (like iron and zinc) and crude fiber. 20 N. sativa seeds are reported to have several pharmacological effects, including analgesic, appetizer, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. 21 Despite extensive research on the phytochemical pharmacological properties of N. sativa seeds, N. sativa seed extracts are not yet completely characterized chemically.…”
