4-Nitrophenyl acrylate ( NPA ) was prepared and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopic techniques. Poly(4-nitrophenyl acrylate ) [poly( NPA) ] and copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA ) and NPA having various feed compositions in a 2-butanone solution using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator at 65ЊC { 0.5ЊC were prepared. Copolymer compositions were determined by 1 H-NMR analysis. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined by Fineman-Ross, Kelen -Tudös, and extended Kelen -Tudös methods. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. Thermogravimetric analysis of the polymers was performed in air and their thermal stability was studied.

A survey of the development of hydrophilic resins based on dimethylacrylamide (DMA) is presented. It describes the preparation of DMA-based resins by suspension copolymerization of DMA and acrylamide-based crosslinking and functional monomers. Swellability data for a number of DMA-based resins are tabulated, demonstrating that the resins swell to approximately the same extent in dichloromethane as they do in water, methanol dimethylformamide or dimethylsulpboxide, but they swell only slightly or not at allin tetrahydrofuran. Typical chemical reactions employed for quantitative estimation or derivatization of resin-bound functional groups, including those involving intra-resin erosslinking, are discussed. The development of composite polymer supports, in which the DMA-based polymer is supported on kieselguhr particles or an amphiphilic ion exchange polymer is supported on DMA-based resin beads, is also covered briefly.

A number of reactive styrene derivatives 3 ah was synthesized and copolymerized in suspension with styrene and divinylbenzene to produce beaded styrene-based resins 5a-h, carrying bromo, methoxy, chloromethyl, hydroxymethyl, hydroxyethyl, or a-hydroxy4methoxybenzyl groups. The swelling behaviour of selected samples of these resins was studied in tetrahydrofuran, toluene, dichloromethane, dioxane, ethyl acetate, dimethylformamide, and methanol. Swellability data are given for resin samples having different percentages of crosslinking and for those produced in the presence of chlorobenzene as a monomer diluent (or polymerization solvent). The significance of the swellability data are briefly discussed in terms of the nature of solvent, the degree of crosslinking and the effect of the monomer diluent on the matrix structure. Details of a series of model reactions of the resin-bound functional groups are also given, and the results are discussed on the basis of resin swellability and polymer-substrate compatibility.
